At The Leadership Group, we are specialists in the development of people, with a particular focus on the development of leaders and leadership teams. Our leadership and management expertise spans the vocations of human development and performance, community capacity building, organizational psychology, management, leadership, entrepreneurship, adult education, training and business coaching.

To this wealth of human development experience, we add expertise and practice in the science of leadership. Also known as neuro leadership, this emerging field of study applies the findings of neuroscience to leadership situations. We have found this to be a critical addition to leadership development in today’s brain-powered workplace, where leaders must achieve results through the brain power of others.

About the Science

Neuroscience studies the nervous system, encompassing biology, chemistry and medicine, as well as engineering, computer science, mathematics and other related disciplines. At The Leadership Group, we are particularly interested in studies that use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

fMRI is a type of imaging scan that measures neural activity in the brain and is at the core of brain mapping science today. fMRI enables scientists to correlate individuals’ brain activity with external stimuli that affect the individual. For the first time in history, scientists are able to witness the brain’s activity in certain contexts to understand things like how the brain responds when asked certain questions or when performing specific tasks.

We are also interested in a field of study called neuroplasticity, which shows that our brains continue to develop throughout life. We now know that the human brain undergoes both structural and functional change as a result of environmental input. Learning, memory, communication, and all brain functions can be trained and developed throughout life.

How Science Enhances Leadership

At The Leadership Group, we have embraced the science of leadership because it helps us help our clients to develop skills that are necessary to lead effectively in today’s workplace. The science provides us with the knowledge we need to change habits, individuals, teams and entire organizations by stimulating the right brain pathways and literally changing the structure of the brain to thrive in today’s organizational environments.

The scientific angle to our approach has these benefits:

  • It provides revolutionary techniques for leaders to coach and inspire positive behaviours in their teams and organizations.
  • It proves the value of the coaching approach to leadership, in which leaders learn how to guide individuals to come up with answers and correct paths of action for themselves. This is an area in which we specialize.
  • It deepens our understanding about how people naturally learn, change and resist change. This knowledge improves our ability to help leaders learn new skills and it enables us to train leaders to proactively create the change they need.
  • It proves what was previously assumed through psychological and sociological observations. Now, beyond observing that certain actions, techniques and approaches seem to work, we know why they work and we can more accurately apply them in real-world contexts.
  • It isolates certain assumptions that were not quite accurate and ensures that our leadership development approaches are not based on myths, misconceptions or partial knowledge.
